Granada, March 18, 2025. The University of Granada recently hosted the seminar “Obstetric Violence: Concepts and Approaches” as part of the “Democracy and Citizenship” course in the Philosophy degree program. The session was led by Ana Laura García Presas, Director of Curriculum Development and Advisory at the National University of Entre Ríos (Argentina), during her international secondment within the European project IPOV Respectful Care.
Invited by Professor Ester Massó Guijarro, who teaches the course, García Presas delivered a class aimed at enriching students’ critical understanding of obstetric violence from a theoretical and comparative perspective.
The seminar centered on analyzing obstetric violence through Pierre Bourdieu’s theory of fields and habitus, offering tools to understand power relations and the various social actors involved in this issue. The session explored the different positions and struggles surrounding respectful childbirth in both Argentina and Spain and addressed the challenges academia faces in further researching this field.
The activity aimed to promote critical reflection among students on concepts, narratives, and experiences shared by women, activists, and professionals. It also encouraged debate on key course concepts such as democratic citizenship and rights, raising questions about the role of academia in producing knowledge and supporting social transformation processes.
Ana Laura García Presas’ participation strengthens academic cooperation between the two universities and opens new opportunities for exchanging knowledge and experiences on human rights and sexual and reproductive health.
