En el Iscte de Lisboa, la investigadora principal de IPOV – RESPECTFUL CARE analizó cómo un concepto surgido de los movimientos sociales latinoamericanos llegó a incorporarse a las agendas políticas internacionales y europeas.
As part of the dissemination activities of the IPOV – RESPECTFUL CARE project, Patrizia Quattrocchi (University of Udine, Italy), Principal Investigator of the project, delivered the keynote lecture “Violencia Obstétrica. De los movimientos sociales latinoamericanos a las agendas políticas internacionales y europeas: una trayectoria de tres décadas” at the opening of the 1st nascer.pt Forum – Critical Perspectives on Birth, held on 24 June 2026 at Iscte – University Institute of Lisbon.
The forum brought together academics, Iscte students and representatives of Portuguese civil society organisations working to promote reproductive rights and respectful maternity care, including OVO Portugal – Observatório da Violência Obstétrica and the Associação Portuguesa pelos Direitos da Mulher na Gravidez e Parto.
The audience also included members of IPOV – RESPECTFUL CARE from Europe and Latin America, who had gathered at Iscte during the preceding days for the project’s 4th Consortium Meeting. The forum therefore provided an important opportunity to extend discussions beyond the consortium and engage directly with Portuguese academic and civil society communities.
The keynote also formed part of the activities carried out during Patrizia Quattrocchi’s secondment, hosted between June and July 2026 by Isabel Ferreira at UTERUS – Gimnográvida, in Porto, within the framework of the staff exchanges promoted by IPOV – RESPECTFUL CARE.
Funded through the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions Staff Exchanges programme, IPOV – RESPECTFUL CARE fosters interdisciplinary and international collaboration to advance research on obstetric violence, respectful maternity care and the protection of reproductive rights.
The project brings together more than 40 researchers from 19 partner institutions across nine countries. Through international mobility, interdisciplinary collaboration and engagement with academic institutions, healthcare professionals, policymakers and civil society, the project promotes the co-production and circulation of knowledge between Europe and Latin America.
Events such as the nascer.pt Forum provide valuable opportunities to connect research with civil society, healthcare practice and policy discussions, contributing to a broader international dialogue on respectful, evidence-based and rights-based maternity care.

A detailed summary of the main issues addressed during the keynote was prepared by Dr Guillermo Javier De Cicco, gynaecologist-obstetrician and member of the IPOV team at Hospital Materno Infantil de San Isidro:

The document examines the Latin American origins of the concept, its incorporation into legal and international frameworks, its expansion within Europe and the current debates surrounding terminology, consent, institutional violence and respectful maternity care
