INEDYTO Seminar: Reflections on Obstetric Violence and Respectful Motherhood in Argentina

As part of the INEDYTO Bioethics Seminar at the Faculty of Psychology of the University of Granada, Ana Laura García Presas, a member of the IPOV project, delivered a presentation on the current situation of obstetric violence and respectful motherhood in Argentina. Her talk addressed both the progress made in this field and the existing challenges that persist in the Argentine context.

During her presentation, García Presas introduced the IPOV project, under which she is undertaking her research stay at the University of Granada under the supervision of Professor Ester Massó Guijarro. Her analysis explored the various perspectives that have emerged regarding obstetric violence in Argentina, a phenomenon that has gained increasing attention in public debate in recent years.

One of the key challenges identified is the need to create spaces for dialogue among the various stakeholders involved, including healthcare professionals, civil society organizations, and public institutions. These spaces are essential for fostering discussions that lead to effective solutions and alternatives to guarantee women’s rights during pregnancy, childbirth, and the birth of their children.

Obstetric violence is a multifaceted issue that involves medical, legal, ethical, and social aspects. In Argentina, despite the existence of laws aimed at ensuring dignified and respectful maternal care, harmful practices that violate women’s rights continue to persist. Excessive medicalization of childbirth, lack of adequate information for patients, and the imposition of interventions without informed consent are among the most common issues.

The seminar featured both in-person attendees and researchers and activists participating virtually. Following the presentation, a valuable exchange of ideas and experiences took place, allowing participants to reflect on strategies to improve maternal care and strengthen the fight against obstetric violence.

The discussion surrounding respectful motherhood and the eradication of obstetric violence remains an ongoing challenge in Argentina and many other regions of the world. Events like the INEDYTO Bioethics Seminar play a crucial role in raising awareness of these issues and promoting the development of public policies that ensure care based on respect, autonomy, and human rights for women.
