Exploring the Human and Political Dimensions of Gestation, Birth, and Breastfeeding
Gestation, birth, and breastfeeding are human acts with profound phenomenological and political dimensions. However, it is only recently that they have begun to receive the attention they deserve from philosophy and other disciplines. This lack of recognition is largely explained by the fact that these experiences belong to women in an androcentric and patriarchal context, and also because they involve beings without their own voice according to an adult-centric perspective.
In response to this situation, feminist movements both inside and outside academia have come together to assert that the personal is also political in the origin of life. Additionally, initiatives have emerged to address a serious global public health problem: obstetric violence, which, as a form of sexual and gender-based violence, undermines the freedom and rights of those who are pregnant and breastfeeding within a framework of full recognition and agency.
The main goal of this conference is twofold. First, it aims to raise awareness among students and the public about the importance of the reproductive processes of pregnancy, birth, and breastfeeding, which are deeply interconnected in all their dimensions. Second, it seeks to inform and specifically denounce obstetric violence as a widespread phenomenon that violates the human right and freedom to gestate, give birth, and breastfeed without violence in our society.
Experts from various fields will join this conference, along with contributions from activists in movements related to birth and breastfeeding rights, to advocate for respected and recognized motherhood and to combat obstetric violence.
