IPOV-Respectful Care participates in the next nascer.pt scientific session on respectful obstetric care and relational care in birth

Lisbon, June 2026. As part of the scientific visit of Carina Leiva, from IPOV and the Universidad Nacional de Entre Ríos, Argentina, and Ivana Cecilia Iriarte, from IPOV and Hospital San Isidro, Argentina, to the Laboratory for Social Studies on Birth — nascer.pt, a new scientific session will be held on respectful models of obstetric care and the institutionalisation of relational care in birth.

The session will take place on 12 June 2026 at 2:30 p.m., in Room B226, Building 4, Iscte — University Institute of Lisbon, with online streaming available. The event is open to the general public and does not require prior registration.

The activity is part of the research project IPOV-Respectful Care — International Platform on Obstetric Violence, an international platform focused on research, knowledge transfer and the promotion of respectful, safe and person-centred practices in pregnancy, childbirth, birth and postpartum care.

The scientific session will include two presentations, both delivered in Spanish.

The first presentation, “Implementación de modelos de atención respetuosa en obstetricia: estrategias educativas para transformar prácticas respetuosas, seguras y centradas en las personas”, will be delivered by Carina Leiva. Her presentation will address the role of education and professional training in transforming obstetric practices, with a focus on safety, respect and person-centred care.

Carina Leiva is a Licensed Obstetrician, Specialist in University Teaching and holds a Master’s degree in Family and Community Health. She is a lecturer at the Universidad Nacional de Entre Ríos, in the Binational Degree in Obstetrics; President of the Latin American Federation of Obstetricians — FLO; a healthcare professional in a health unit in Argentina; Head of the team of Licensed Obstetricians and President of the Teaching and Research Committee at Hospital J. J. de Urquiza, Argentina. She is also a researcher in the IPOV-Respectful Care project.

The second presentation, “Más allá de la humanización: el desafío de institucionalizar el cuidado relacional en el nacimiento”, will be delivered by Ivana Cecilia Iriarte. Her presentation will focus on the need to move towards institutional models capable of sustaining relational care in birth, beyond general discourses on humanisation.

Ivana Cecilia Iriarte is a graduate in Social Communication and History, a specialist in perinatal health, a researcher in the IPOV-Respectful Care project and Director of Espaço Inalbis, an institution dedicated to the training of professionals in the perinatal field.

The Laboratory for Social Studies on Birth — nascer.pt is a transdisciplinary platform for research and science communication hosted by CIES-Iscte. Created in 2017, nascer.pt has since promoted scientific sessions in the field of social studies on birth. These sessions are held regularly and are open to the general public, encouraging dialogue between research, professional practice and society.
