As part of its ongoing commitment to promote dignified and respectful maternal care, IPOV Respectful Care is proud to present a special Barcelona screening of the acclaimed Argentine documentary Parir, directed by Florencia Mujica Laínez. This intimate, collective portrait of childbirth as a political act shines a light on the myriad ways we give birth and are born within systems that too often erase the desires, processes, and voices of birthing people.
Parir has earned widespread recognition for its sensitivity and advocacy, emerging as a powerful tool to spark reflection on obstetric violence and the urgent need to guarantee truly respectful care. Featuring cinematography that brings viewers inside the delivery room, the film explores questions such as: What would it look like to experience birth without forced positions, silencing shrouds, or routine interventions that prioritize efficiency over compassion?
The documentary was produced with advisory support from Las Casildas, the feminist organization co-founded by Julieta Saulo—social psychologist, certified puericulturist, doula, mother, and one of Argentina’s leading experts on obstetric violence and respectful birth. Saulo coordinates the Puericulture Department at Maternidad Estela de Carlotto and played a central role in shaping the film’s portrayal of alternative, nonviolent birthing practices. In collaboration with Eduardo Fernández, former Head of Obstetrics (and now Director) at the same maternity hospital, Parir reveals how midwifery, cultural sensitivity, and community solidarity can transform the birth experience.
“The two most important moments in life are birth and death, yet they’re often endured in isolation and under heavy medical intervention,” reflects one of the film’s protagonists. “A midwife can change that.”

After the screening, attendees are invited to join Julieta Saulo and cultural producer Jimena Kahlo for an open forum on how the lessons of Parir can inform local maternity care practices—addressing issues such as routine cesareans, enforced silence, and culturally insensitive protocols.
